At this time of remembrance I have dedicated this poem to all the innocent unsung heroes.............................................................

THE ANIMALS OF WAR.

Please spare a thought today for the Animals who take part in wars.
It is not their desire to face someone else's enemy with no weapons,
......just hooves, teeth, tusk's and claws.

Cart horses, Mules, Donkeys and Ponies, all types of specimen equine.
Camels, Oxen, Elephants and Pigeons and many kinds of furry Canine.

We see our pets when fireworks explode, they shake with fear, terrified.
Imagine that noise constantly and non-stop, a billion trillion times multiplied.

They never answered a call to arms; they never had a choice.
They had to go, there was no Gung-Ho, they had no champion, no voice.

Their fate was not what Mother Nature intended, this wasn't what she had planned.
Her beautiful creations that know nothing of Wars, blown to bits in a foreign land.

There would be no reunions for them years on, their duty was to work and die.
For those who cannot question, there are no reasons why.

No Victory parade, no welcome home, no graveside tears for the Animal dead.
They should have lived peacefully in fields of Green, not screaming and dying in fields of Red.

Remember them for a moment, ask yourself, what is all this fighting and dying for?
Then permit yourself a tear for the innocent heroes...THE ANIMALS OF WAR.

What a beautifully written tribute to all those animals who have suffered and died over the centuries because of human madness...

Sad Makes my stomach hurt, to think of it all. They have no say in the matter, they just have to do what they are told to do.....really, they are slaves....Thank you Joe - I have a photograph, done sometime during or just after WWII, of a shepherd bowing his head, in a field with his working Beardie...I think it is entitled " In Remembrance "

Sad xx

Oh, well written Joe, I think of them a lot, with sadness and anger about them being used like slaves in such terrifying conditions. I wonder if any made it home again. Sad Confused

You're not the only one, Judy, I just didn't want to go and see that film... Crying or Very sad

After the awful terrorist attack in Paris in November 2015 at the Bataclan concert venue, there was an operation conducted by some French special police troops called "Raid" to arrest some of the murderers. A female Belgian sheepdog called Diesel, who bleonged to the "Raid", was shot dead during that operation. Lots of tributes were paid to Diesel on TV, in the papers and in the social media...
