My boy, my girls

Hartley

They found him wandering alone, in Birmingham, I think they said
His body thin, his coat unkempt, lack lustre eyes and hanging head.

The rescue centre took him in, no longer would he have to roam,
And there one day he caught my eye, a mute appeal, ”Please take me home”.

When others saw this ragged soul some said, surprised, ”Do you not mind?
He doesn’t come from proper stock.” I stood amazed, were they all blind?

His head was proud, his eyes so fine, his rough tongue gave such gently licks.
His coat so soft it called to mind the downy fluff of baby chicks.

No paperwork of sire or dam, no breeding pure, that sort of thing.
His eyes said, ”Take me as I am,” and in my heart I saw a king.

Then - Megan

It was early on a Sunday morning and I had made my sleepy way to the kettle, switched it on and stood leaning against the counter while it bubbled away.

I looked across at Megan, still lying in her bed on the far side of the room.

Neither of us moved – this was a game we played quite often and both of us were good at it.

For several seconds there was absolute stillness as we looked at each other, eye to eye.

The kettle gave up and went quiet and still we looked.

Then, there! - The faintest quiver of the tip of a tail, the body completely still.

I waited, motionless, the quiver grew a little.

Bit by bit, almost against her will, the quiver crept along the tail until she could contain it no longer and the whole of the back end joined in.

I watched and my lips twitched.

Even then, she wasn’t going to give up too easily, in her bed she stayed.

But, one more little twitch from my face.

The tail wagged wildly and she flew across the room and into my arms – and we were one.

We sat on the floor, buried in each other for silent minutes and, for the millionth time, I wondered how two creatures from such different species could be so much in tune with each other.

Millie

and now here is Millie, staring bossily through the window, feet up on the sill, wondering how long she has to wait until I do as she asks.

Swimming across my long haired carpet to wipe the remains of breakfast off her face.

Wriggling on our (?) cube until I am slipping off the edge and thumping her head onto the keyboard, seriously upsetting my spellin.

Helping me put out the washing and not chewing a single peg.

Fetching my slippers and the post.

Picking up all sorts of things that I drop.

Waiting for me out on walks to make sure I don’t get lost.

Sitting quietly in the shops while I search the shelves.

Being an absolute angel while I comb her coat and clean her teeth.

Sitting on my feet as I type this.

Different, but being with me almost everywhere I go, and with a gentle nudge taking possession of my heart and soul in her own way.

Image

I have been so blessed.

Joy, Hartley's tale brings a tear to my eyes every time I read it - and don't say "stop reading it then" because it draws me like a magnet. I too had a Hartley, long before Jethro.

Aw, Mary.

Such a grand name I always thought.

P.S. to my post

Today Millie is Miss Hyde.

As I said once before, "Free to a good home" or even an awful one if she is not careful. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes
She is now in her bed trying to be invisible.

What lovely words dedicated to your Beardies, Joy, they have been so blessed too, the lucky three of them, to have met you and been so much loved by you...

No Joy, not a Hartley by name but very similar circumstances. I only had him for 2 years but they were a wonderful 2 years.

Aw Mary, such bitter sweet memories.

They all have knack of slipping into your heart without you even noticing.

This is Nelson, kept padlocked to a heavy chain and living in his own filth in a dark shed; so stressed that the end of his tale was chewed to shreds. What could we do but rescue him. And slip into my heart he did.

Oh what a beautiful boy Nelson is, of curse you'd have to rescue him.

I hope the people (owners) were punished in some way.

Why have a dog?! Twisted Evil

I can certainly identify with Millie's beard cleaning technique; her Uncle Wizard does it on the sitting room furniture ..... thank goodness it wipes off Surprised Rolling Eyes Laughing
