Some time ago I was visiting a friend who was in hospital.
A man who was visiting his wife came into the ward with his little Dog.
I watched as the man lifted the little Dog on to her bed.
The dog was delighted to see the lady and wagged his tail non stop, but sadly there was no response from the lady.
I learned later that the Dogs name was Bruce.
I was so touched by what I saw that I compiled this poem later that day.
This is a True story.

THE TRUE STORY OF A DOG NAMED BRUCE.

Bruce the Dog cannot understand why his human Mum never greets him when he sits on her hospital bed.
She never even looks at him, she just gazes blankly ahead.

Bruce has no understanding of Dementia, he is confused as to the reasons why.
His Mum now ignores him completely when once he was the apple of her eye.

What happened to the games and the cuddles?
The love and the fun that they had always shared.
He saw her collapse one day and fall to the ground.
Since then it seems for him she hasn't cared.

He doesn't know that she isn't the woman that she once was,
That her mind has entered a different dimension.
A condition that man has no answer to yet.
No cure and no complete prevention.

Each day with his human Dad Bruce visits the hospital.
When he sees her he frantically wags his tail.
He waits for her joyous reaction.
But his excitement is sadly all to no avail.

His instinct tells him that he must now be great comfort for his Dad.
His vocation evermore is to help heal the broken man's sorrow.
The sad faithful pair leave the hospital side by side,
Ever hopeful she will recognise them both tomorrow.
