Hi I’m a new beardie owner and was wondering the best way to deal with a pooey bottom which has happened a few times ( she is 7months old).
Do I cut the fur short or just bath her regularly ?
Any info appreciated! |

I used to do a bit of both....kept her furry bottom not quite so furry but not so much that her friends would notice and make fun of her and give her a rinse with warm water when necessary - you dont really want to have to be shampooing her a lot ... unless she is a bit whiffy.....best of luck! |

Arrrr, The joys of being owned by a Beardie are many fold, Dire Rears is just one such delight which, you will find, is a much discussed topic. We too favour a discreet trim of the "area" followed by a shampoo and rinse as required.
Intimate area trimming requires a cool nerve, a steady hand and some better than average scissors.
If this is a frequent issue, it may be worth reviewing her diet ... for example, our Mackenzie doesn't tolerate anything with chicken in it.
And welcome to the FBC
Mark. |

As Mark says keep the area trimmed otherwise the hair will just keep getting caught up in the poo. The best scissors for this are blunt ended curved ones. Needs two of you, one to hold the beardie and one to do the job. Again Mark is there with checking diet to make sure it's not making her a bit on the loose side.
Good luck and welcome |

Thank you all! And very true about the diet, most of the issues happen after we give her a doggy dental stick so I’ll be getting rid of those!! |

Yes sounds like you have hit the nail on the head, contrarily those dental sticks are full of sugar! |

I had regular problems with the dreaded dire rear (at least twice a week) but Fraser was lots better after I stopped the dental chews. He improved again when I won some grain free food at at Goonhavern and is now on this full time. As he enjoyed his daily chew I tried Denatalife - (others are available) with no further problems. on the rare occasion that he gets a problem now warm water and a spray of puppy fresh helps. |

Mine get dire rears from time to time and I am not sure why. They haven’t had any probs since last summer. Seems very hot weather does it sometimes. I have them on Yudigest tabs at their main meal for healthy gut bacteria.. just a thought. |

I am the lucky owner of a Beardie who isn't prone to dire rear! However, a friend of mine whose female Beardie has a rather delicate tummy regularly has to face the problem. When her Elfie is in one of those pooey bottom periods, she braids the strands of fur located in the "strategic area" to avoid them being soiled - looks a bit weird from close up but it works! |

What a great idea Nina When Triskel was very ill a while ago the vets put a bit of that sticky stretchy bandage on the top of her tail, an idea I have banked, just in case |

Sounds like a good idea, Jacquie, I will pass it on to my friend (and try to remember it for Foxie if/when ever needed!). |
