Sorry chaps have been poorly and neglected site.
Thank you for the information on boosters and worms. Had never heard of worm counting. I think I will take them for check ups and claw trim but skip the jabs. You have given me the confidence to do that. Moll’s teeth may need looking at too.
We only want the best don’t we. XX |

I too have been missing for a while, combination of health problems and mighty works around the household. However, we are on the way up, starting with my beautiful new potting shed-( see "nothing to see")- and soon I will have a new fence and will be able to leave the back door open for Millie to potter in and out at will.
Thank you for all the useful information, I didn't know about the availability of testing kits. Millie has had no vaccinations since her puppy ones.
When we were in Wales we had a lovely, older vet. Among other things he would never charge for examining a suspicious lump. Sadly, when he retired his younger replacement was quick to offer various commercial treatments.
I have had concerns about local vets since we came back to Derbyshire. The first one, on hearing that Millie had a very faint heart murmur instantly persuasively offered a range of expensive sounding tests. They had moved to a new premises where I noticed that the first thing encountered on going in was a huge shop, full of all sorts of things you didn't know you needed.
It was also much further away, so I decided to try more locally. This new practice often substituted a vet other than the one I had asked to see, prescribed a treatment which was specifically not suitable for dogs with auto-immune problems and and on the occasion when she was tested for possible malignancy left me a message to say that they had the results but did not say what they were - leaving me with a worrying weekend until they became available the following Monday.
We are now with vet practice three. Fingers crossed everyone please.
Funnily enough I am finding a similar pattern in my own medical treatment

Joy....
I am now without animals, but back when I had cats and dogs my vets' practice was bought up by a national vets' practice....oddly enough , at the same time they began to be less amenable to home visits ( at the time, I was not driving much if at all ), weekend visits, out-of-hours visits ( once when I had rung in what could have been an emergency on a Saturday, they enquired if it could wait until Monday....... ) and they bought and converted a new premises on the outskirts of the village.
Until this time, they had had an office right smack in the middle of the village for 70-odd years. Everyone in the village could get to them, even older or physically disabled people. Now, if one has difficulty getting about, one has to find someone to drive one and one's animals to the outskirts of the village. They also began to offer widgets and gizmos I never knew I needed as well as what I would call unnecessary medical interventions. I have to say, I am not entirely sorry I do not need a vet's attentions these days. It was very sad to see this happen but I think it is happening all over the country now, the buying out of independent vets' practices by a few large nation-wide organisations. I understand that veterinary practices are considered a good investment, and so they are becoming part of acquired businesses in portfolios...sigh.
Good luck with your new vet, Joy - you will find the right one I am sure |

You are so right there Judy and I don't like it, it's the animals that suffer when it becomes big business, but so hard these days to find an independant practice.
Hope you have better luck with the new Vet Joy, you must keep us updated. |
