Be alert! (Britain needs Lerts …)

You really think you know them when you’ve had them 7 years
Lived through and dealt with all their escapades, triumphs and tears
There’s nothing you’ve not come across with which you couldn’t cope
That couldn’t be resolved with help from hot water and soap
It lulls you into being complacent when out for a walk
Enjoying scenery, birdsong and the occasional squawk
So beardie owners please take heed remember stay alert
Especially if the place you walk has wellworn tracks of dirt
It looks so innocent, that dust and molehills forming mounds
Of earth amid the growing grass, through which your beardie bounds
Its only when you turn and find he’s not that close but far behind
Investigating, hold your nose – in open fields anything goes –
He’s rolling in some horse manure, not fresh thank god, but not mature
Enough to make him smell impure, an irresistible dog lure.
We waft our way back to the gate, dog grinning in delight
His white ruff now has green and brown in tinges with the white
The dark slate colour of his coat absorbs the colour changes
Fashion designers please take note this could be your new ranges
While we return from whence we came and bless the shower hose
It won’t be long before my boy is fully clean from tail to nose.

Fortunately, by the time we got home I couldn't smell him, and the stained ruff soon retained its near pristine white. But the little sod! It had been such a lovely uneventful walk over what I call the Rottweiler fields Sad
