I have been putting this off for a while and didn’t want to take away from the sad loss of others either, we have lost some lovely souls both human and dog.
I thought sharing this would be informative for others.

She started peeing a lot on walks and then through the night. Fit and well other than that, good appetite and full of joy and love as usual. We then noticed that she hadn’t peed at all one day so off to vet who on internal exam discovered a tumour around the urethra which was inoperable due to the place it had grown. We were devistated to be told that we had 2/8 weeks with her.

She wondered why we were crying and would stare into our faces trying to understand.. her paw placed on my leg in an effort to comfort Mum. She never did like to see me upset. We had antibiotics and massaged her bladder and started a bucket list of things and yummy foods which she delighted in. She was quite poorly one weekend and I stayed up with her all night and she seemed to rally after that.

We had 16 weeks and 3 days with her .... she was full of bounce and apart from getting us up every two hours through the nights, she looked good. The Metacam seemed to have shrunk the tumour enough to allow pee to pass which was a good thing and gave us more time. We were hoping for her to be able to have her Summer “on the bank” a gentle slope in the garden where she would snooze with a stash of teddies .. her fave spot.

The weather was lovely for weeks and we had early morning walks, snoozes on the bank, lots of cuddles and the best food ever. The last 48 hours she went down fast and she looked me in the eye and there was pain .. so we made the arrangement.

It was 1st June the last of the sunny days. The air was full of the smell of roses and birdsong, a gentle breeze moved over her as she dozed with the help of something to relax her. Our vet was lovely and came to our garden. As I had been shielding she used a long line so that we could distance from her but get close to Lizzie. So there on the soft grass we cuddled her across the bridge. Mollie was present but still waits for her to come for dinner and goes looking for her round the house and garden.

Five weeks now and still crying every day .. I haven’ lost a dog, I have lost a family member, a soul mate, a dance partner and many other wonderful and irreplaceable things. She loved companion shows and had a wall full of rosettes and enjoyed training and learning new things. Achieving her Gold Good Citizen award. She loved all of that, loved people.

Lizzie .. Pattishawl Just Delightful.. you were and still are the most beautiful of all souls, full of joy, love, intelligence and humour. You are and always will be so missed and so loved. We are broken. Thank you for sharing your life with us our darling girl. Now running free. XXX

What beautiful words in tribute to Lizzie.

It is always a heartache but how fortunate you were that your vet was able to come out to you, to let Lizzie go in peace and familiarity of home.

She will always be with you deep in your heart.

Sending a big hug to you and to Lizzie at the Bridge.

Xxxx

Thank you for your love and understanding... you will all have been there and it hurts. It’s the price we pay for loving them and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Mollie is a bit lost, they were together all their lives. She seems so old and vulnerable now but we are doing our best to bring her something exciting. She seems to have given up on country walks all of a sudden but she goes on short sniffy walks which she enjoys and I rediscovered an old wobble Kong treat dispenser which she knocks around and that seems to lift her mood.

Love never dies and “energy”. has to go on even if it is in a different form.
She is still around being herself somewhere... bright and beautiful as ever. XXX

Thank you my sweet darling xxx

Oh Gerrie, I haven't come here for a while as it took me some time to recover (it isn't the right word though) from the shock of my own loss, but I still have tears in my eyes after reading that lovely tribute to your Lizzie. All the best to you and to Mollie, it's a hard time for them too when their friends leave...

I too haven't been on for ages. Hugs Gerrie, and Mollie. I'm so glad you had that last summer together, but it doesn't take away the grief. Aching for you and Mollie.

Pauline, that's how I lost my border collie/bearded collie cross rescue Shadow some years ago. It didn't make it any less respectful though, and my vet was wonderful with him. He had a very dignified and caring end, we brought him home in the car boot and then (because you could in those days) buried him in his favourite spot in the garden.

Chester was also in the love of his family as well as his Dads car. It’s the cuddles that count. My friend had the same thing the same week with their Dobie. Much love to you. XXX
