Well... For the last few months I had been "looking without looking" for a new dog companion to bring some sunshine back into my and Foxie's lives, after the huge pain of having to let my beloved Miss You to the bridge last June. I knew I didn't want a puppy, and thought a nice medium-sized, not too old (3-5 years old) rescue dog would be great. I was looking at rescue associations' Facebook pages, and although I liked a few dogs, I did nothing further which might lead to their adoption, which means they were probably not the "right ones". About 3 weeks ago, I opened the FB page of an association called Kharma Dogs" ( Very Happy ) and this is what I was suddenly faced with:

Image

I stopped breathing for a few seconds and couldn't believe it: there in front of me was a perfect copy of Miss You! Although I had never looked for a lookalike at all (I was more into Cocker Spaniels and medium-sized Poodles), it was suddenly obvious to me that this dog was waiting for me! I immediately filled in the rehoming questionnaire and sent it, without even thinking twice! I didn't have much hope of being chosen as his new family as the association had specified on its page that they favoured rehoming families who lived in the same department (Aude) as where it was based, and I live quite a distance from the Aude department (a good 4 hours' drive). However, believe it or not, last week one of the people in charge of Kharma Dogs called me to say that I had been chosen as I looked exactly like the right family for him even though I was further away than the specified distance. Since then... I've lived in a dream!

Let me tell you more about him: he is 3 years old, has recently been neutered and his foster family has called him Bob, which I don'r really like, so I've renamed him Wapi, a Navajo word that means "lucky". He is a Poodle x Pyrenean sheepdog cross and belonged to a huge group of over 20 dogs who lived on the large grounds of a farm - the dogs were fed, sometimes even let into the house, but apart from that... they were totallly neglected, they bred without anything done about it (which explains their ever increasing number), were not groomed or even taken care of when they had health problems... Neighbours started complaining, the association was contacted, and fortunately the totally irresponsible owner of the "pack" agreed to have them taken away. The volunteers in the association had a tough job washing them, cutting the thick "dreadlocks" their fur had formed, and of course having them examined by a vet - most of them (not mine, though) had infected ears - otitis. Surprisingly, apart from the ear problems, most of them seem to be healthy, loving dogs, clever and quick to understand the rules of their foster homes. Wapi has shown absolutely no aggressive behaviour towards his foster family's cat, which is essential for me.

I am going to meet Wapi on Thursday, Foxie is of course going with me, and we'll introduce her to her new friend first on Thursday night, then we'll leave Wapi and will spend the night in a neighbouring B&B, and on Friday morning a 2nd meeting of the 2 dogs will take place. If all goes well (and I really think it will), the 3 of us will come back here for what I hope will be a long happy life...

Wapi's foster family has sent photos of him everyday, it makes waiting more bearable!

Sleeping with his foster family's dogs!

Especially for Judy, a BIG nose!

Oh he's gorgeous, what a lucky find Very Happy It's obviousley meant to be Nina.

Some years ago now I was trawling the net and came across a little rescue dog that was in a right mess but looked just like a friends dog she had lost some time before. Well I just had to send her the pic and of course she decided she had to have her Very Happy Only problem was she was a very long way away, my friend was in Kent and the dog in Linconshire, which is a fair old drive. My Daughter drove her in thick fog all the way, it took hours, they eventually got home at 10.30pm at night after leaving first thing in the morning! Then they had to bath the dog as she smelt so bad!

She turned out to be the best dog my friend had ever had, although contrary to what she was told, that the dog was a year old and small/medium size, she just grew and grew! Turned out the size of a bouvier Laughing

Fingers crossed for you Wink Very Happy

I love your story Jacquie! Hopefully Wapi is really 3 years old and a Poodle x Pyrenean sheepdog and he won't turn into a large monster! Shocked Laughing

Thanks so much Mark and Kathryn! You are allowed to un-cross your fingers to have your dinner tonight, though. Wink

that expression just has to be

"Aha, you are just the person I am looking for"

You were called.....someone in the current carers obviously speaks "dog".

All best wishes for you both Nina

Joy and Millie

Thank you so much for all your lovely comments! Tomorrow is "D-Day" and I am more and more excited at the idea of meeting that little fellow. I really think Foxie will be happy to have a new friend, as she has been quite depressed since we lost Miss You last June - digging huge holes in the garden, which she had never done before, becoming obsessed with chasing our cats, barking more and more often... So I'm really keeping my fingers crossed! I am already totally in love with Wapi, so I do hope Foxie will be too!

We will all be thinking of you, Foxie and Wapi tomorrow for the big meeting day and hope to hear that he is home with you on Friday. Safe journey tomorrow xxx

Thanks again for your comments!

This is where I'm off to tomorrow morning - could be worse, couldn't it? Carcassonne is a beautiful medieval city and Wapi's foster family lives about 10-minutes' drive from there. I spent some camping holidays close to it with my ex years ago and we were amazed by its beauty. Maybe some of you know it?

I still enjoyed it though Very Happy
