I read on Facebook a few days ago about remedies for a sore eye to try before we do a vet visit. One of the suggestions was colloidal silver ,which I have in a pot.Does anyone know if this is safe to use in eyes and do you need to dilute it first...mine's like jelly.Any other remedies I could try, please? Her eye is not very red and no rubbing just a little watery and then over night and in morning there is pus in the corner. This has come and gone over the last few weeks and I'm wondering if she has an allergy .She does love to hurl herself into the grass and roll when we go out...I can't see anything that might cause an irritation and I'm keeping her hair well out of the way. I would value your opinions.
Thank you.

My instant reaction when reading this post is DO NOT TRY TO SELF MEDICATE. The eyes are far too precious to an animal to run any risks with getting it wrong and I'm not sure that Facebook is the best place to take advice from. I would take her to the vet. But that is just my opinion. I hope she is better soon. |

Yes the vet I think too. Hope she gets well soon. Not a grass seed or fly or eyelash is it? |

Deffinately don't use the gel in her eye, you can use colloidal silver in eyes but only in the liquid form. Leucillin is very good and very safe for eyes as well, you can get that in a dropper bottle. I'm inclined to agree that if it doesn't resolve fairly quickly take her to the vet just in case. It does sound like she may have just got some debris in it, but she could have scratched the cornea when rolling about and that needs medication for sure.
Allergies in dogs tend to manifest themselves with itching rather than the sort of symptoms we would get. |

I agree, it is best not to use medication you are unsure of and when you do not know what is wrong.
Is it just the one eye or both? If she rubs that side on the grass then it can well be irritation. Gently bathe the eye(s) a few times a day and try to keep her from rubbing on the grass for a while.
Obviously if it starts to worry her or worsens or other symptoms appear then a visit to the vet to check her over is advisable but hopefully it will soon improve. |

Fran, I have used colloidal silver in it's liquid form to clean eyes ( bathing & using a dropper to flush). An opthalmic vet said it was ok to use. Most dogs get a gunky eye once in a while, but as others have said, if it continues or gets worse then perhaps a trip to vet to check it out. |

I have used Colloidal Silver as drops in the eyes. You can get it in liquid form.
It worked for my girl. (dog )! It's wonderful, Heals anything, and the cream.
Don't put the gel or cream in the eye though. |

Four weeks ago we noticed Hobbes third eye lid was pin going on red and had some yellowish gunk like sleep. We washed the eye carefully and cleared away all the gunk and took him to the vet.
That was four weeks ago now and, after seeing four different vets at the same practice (including a BVA eye specialist) and three different anti-biotics it has only marginally begun to clear up.
On Sunday of the bank holiday weekend was our last visit and an eye swab was taken. We still await the results.
I phoned up today and the results are in but the Vet who submitted the swab is away all week and the specialist is out. They were going to get one of the other vets to call back today, but no one did!!!
Very worried.... very worried indeed. Coming to my wits end...
Hobbes is fine in himself and is now resigned to the three times a day dose of anti biotic gel.
In the photo you will see a red abrasion which he got, we believe, rubbing his face on his carpet/bedding. It has gone now I am pleased to say however, the eyelid is still quite pink.
Would appreciate any tips/thoughts/suggestions or names of a good veterinary eye specialist

So sorry to hear about Hobbes eye Robert, I would certainly call the vets first thing in the morning and ask once again for someone to phone you, reminding them that they were supposed to ring you today. I'm surprised the eye specialist wasn't able to throw any light on this. I assume they have done a shirma tear test to rule out dry eye?
I've had a similar problem with Tarak, which started with one eye and then progressed to the other, from what you say and the photos it wasn't as bad as Hobbes, both eyes were very red but not a lot of discharge. My vet suggested saline wash and Clinitas Soothe eye drops. It took weeks but at long last his eyes are normal again, I'm keeping up the Clinitas Soothe though for the present time.
Please do let us know how you get on and what the swab shows. Hope Hobbes is more comfortable soon, it would do no harm to use a saline wash anyway which may help a bit. |

Hi Robert. I can't give any advice but I wanted to add my moral support. I had an eye prob with Jethro a few weeks ago when the right eye wasn't opening quite as it normally does. Saw the vet and was given eye drops which appear to have cleared up anything that was there, although the vet couldn't find anything wrong. I did wonder if Jethro had got a bit of dust or seed in it but there was nothing like that. They put us mere mortals through it, don't they |

Well,Polly has been to the vet again as the problem came back and the vet thinks the tear ducts in both eyes maybe aggravated so it's back to the drops again. He,the vet, doesn't think it is a major problem.I suspect it is caused by dust or pollen.Polly has been rubbing her face on the carpet too which hasn't helped.

Well the vet, who is an eye specialist, seems to think that Hobbes has a "dry eye" problem. However, he would like us to take Hobbes back to see him when the conjunctivitis like discharge reappears, to give him some more tests to confirm is diagnosis. He advised me to get some VitA Pos from the chemists. It is something that is used by people who have dry eye and he assured me it was okay to use on Hobbes. So we're giving that a try...
I think I need to get a second opinion from another veterinary eye specialist. So any recommendations for such a person, in the East Midlands would be much appreciated.
Apart from that, the boy is fine although he prefers to be indoors in the cool on these warm sunny days.

Oh that's a pain Robert. I've had two beardies with dry eye they were diagnosed with the shirma tear test and put on optimune ointment with various lubricants for the boy. As far as I'm aware it usually affects both eyes, it did with mine anyway. Sorry I can't help you with the specialist as I'm in Kent. I hope you can get a deffinate diagnosis sorted quickly. Thanks for the update. |

Thanks for that Jacquie.... It doesn't seem to be effecting the other eye at the moment... I am no expert so I can't tell. Hobbes can't speak and gives no indication that there is an issue other than the pink third eyelid (which sometime looks red) and the discharge every so often. So I have to rely on the honesty and ability of the vet..... |
