Hi

I got a phone call last night about a Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog. For the last few months he has been left alone in a conservatory as the person who cared for him passed away. Friends are going in to feed him but sadly this is his life at the moment.

The RSPCA said they will put him to sleep and other rescues dont take dogs unless they are abandoned and picked up by the dog warden. I think he has been abandoned myself. The house is sold and the dog needs to be moved by next week. He cannot be privately sold due to some of the people he may attract and we do not know yet what is temperament is like.

Time is running out for this poor dog and so are the options and I may have to assess him and make the decision which is crap.

I have contacted a couple of breeders to see if they know anyone who rescues this breed as I canít find anyone on the internet but they have not replied to me.

If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Chris

Sad Sorry to hear about this Chris - sadly I have no ideas, but send best wishes for this dog. Must admit, I had never heard of this breed before.

Thanks Max, I appreciate it.

I have been talking to a couple of people about him who are not the people going in to see him, so I did not have some of the information that I do now. He has food guarding issues and bit a person while they were feeding him. I worry due to this he may have other emotional problems caused by his environment.

Its difficult to asses a dog truly when its kept in this sort of situation as you are not seeing the real dog, just the result of the fear and stress its under. Rescue organisations have the ability to asses him over a period of time but as he has bitten they may not take him on even if they were willing to. The Dogs Trust Linda will only take dogs from the regional pound were abandoned dogs are taken by the dog warden.

I am waiting to get more information today and to go and see him tomorrow.

Thanks

Hi Judy,

I was supposed to go last weekend to assess the dog as Max had kindly found someone who was interested in him. The people who feed him said they were going to put him on the lead and take him out to see what he was like with their dog and other people. I said that I would have to assess him myself but they never replied to me.

He was going to call me Sunday but has not got back to me yet so something does not seem right.

Sorry Max to mess you about.

Thanks Chris. Will let people know. Maybe if things change we can carry on. They are from a Bully rescue group, so have lots of members & someone did seem as if there was hope for a home.

Thank you Barbara, x

Thanks Max,

I emailed the person who originally contacted me and have just had a reply from her. She went round to see whatís going on and they canít get the collar on him, he sounds scarred. I just asked if they could keep me up to date and that I could go and help.

Thanks

Good news Very Happy

He has his collar on and he is going out for walks. Very Happy

I have been told he seems to be ok with other people and much happier now he is out of the conservatory. He now has company at home.

I hope to go over the weekend to see him and assess him with Buddy. Very Happy

I went to see the dog this morning to assess him and sadly I am not able to advise he is re-homed.

He has been seriously traumatised by being isolated in the conservatory and would pose a danger to others. He has bitten before and it was not over food, the person who he bit made a noise that spooked him and the dog reacted by biting.

The poor dog was very distressed and its was distressing seeing him as you know there is a really nice dog in there.

Very sad.

Sad Oh poor dog.

Sorry you had to make that decision Chris, I know how hard that would have been for you. I am sure you have made the right call. xx

I have not stopped thinking about this dog.

I thought over the next few weeks I could help him adjust to life but the house is sold and the dog has to be moved in two weeks time so this is not possible. If I could have helped him then we would of had more time to find someone who had experience with dogs like this.

I really want to see the dog again. He was so stressed yesterday as was the gentleman, we only saw the anxious side of him but I know there a nice dog inside. We are going to see if the dog can be brought to where I live where it is quieter and I can assess him on my own. I could not walk him yesterday as he was so nervous of me being around even though I was calm. He never reacted to me but gave me a signal to keep my distance so the gentleman had to walk him with me which is not ideal, as I prefer to handle the dog myself. What I saw yesterday was not good and doing this may not change things but I will know I have given him another chance and my best shot.

I talked to my vetís today and they will not come to euthanize him as it puts their vetís in danger. They don't have a dart gun to sedate him first. I may just have to work with him so I can take him to the vets to be pts, sole destroying, and even then that may be dangerous.

It is so frustrating as I know his behaviour is due to his environment and given time he could make improvements but time is running out, although he will never fully recover from his isolation.

I could never put anyone in danger of being bitten by him now or in the future and that is in my thoughts.

Sad Oh Chris, I am so sad to hear this. You <know> that you are doing everything you can, dont you?....and you are giving this poor dog the best chance. Even if you are able only to calmly get him to the vet for the last time, then you will have done more for him than it sounds has been done for a long time.

We are all thinking of you and the dog. I know how much you are hurting over this situation, but remember that someone out there is thinking of the dog's best interests, and that person is YOU.

xx
