In the spirit of keeping things alive here, thought I would update you with some recent news on Dougall, as it is also his Birthday.

For the last few months, Dougall has been having tests weekly at the vets having been very ill. Our very first initial thought was that he had diabetes, but that was ruled out, and following an ACTH test, LDDS test, full blood profile, a direct bladder urine test, another test I canít remember the name of, an ultrasound of kidneys and liver, other blood tests to rule out kidney and liver diseases/tumours, and then another ACTH test, we finally got a conclusive diagnosis of Cushingís Disease just before Christmas. We started treatment on 29 December, as the lab needed for the required 12-day blood test was closed for the Christmas break. He is on 50mg Vetoryl daily, and it seems from the recent ACTH blood test this is the appropriate dose for him (although it is the most expensive way of giving him the drug as it is in 1 x 30mg and 2 x 10mg doses unfortunately). We have another ACTH blood test in 4 weeks , 12 weeks and then every 3 months after that.

We are thinking about some hydrotherapy sessions as he has lost a lot of muscle in his back legs - he canít jump into the car or on the sofa anymore, and we have curtailed his walks a bit so he doesnít get too tired. His fur has got very very thin so you can see the skin underneath - Dougall always had such a thick coat I had to keep thinning him out all the time, and his tail is not a patch on the beautiful bush tail he used to have.

This has completely changed him personality wise Ėhe used to be so laid back but now gets stressed really easily and heís waking us up for a wee 2/3 times a night.

I have been in touch with Ninaís friend Muriel whose young Beardie, Pipa, also has Cushingís and they have been very helpful in giving advice and have recommended Cush-X as a supplement. Has anyone else used this, or can recommend anything.

My first concern was that this disease would shorten his lifespan, but have been led to believe he should lead a relatively normal life (such as it is with his SLO and arthritis) once the drugs fully kick in.

Happy Birthday Dougal - so sorry to hear about the cushings Helen but seems you have everything under control, it is a devil to diagnose so at least you have that and can get on with treatment. I think Jills' idea of contacting Jo Tucker is good.

Firstly, happy birthday Dougall.

Helen, I am so sorry to read of Dougall's continuing health problems, but pleased at least that you have a definitive diagnosis, so that at least you can, hopefully, move forward and give him the best life he can have - and no-one better to do that than you. He is a lucky boy to be surrounded by so much love and care. xxx

Happy Birthday Dougall

So sorry to hear that he has been having further problems. Cushings affects dogs in a different way to horses but once the medication is able to control the effects as long as you have regular checks I think you will be able to relax again. xxx

Hi Helen, so sorry to read that Dougall has Cushings, but like everyone else, I am sure when the medication is properly balanced he will feel back to normal. Like Jill says it might be an idea to contact Jo, and she will answer any questions you may have, and put your mind at ease.
Happy Birthday Dougall to you and your siblings xxxx

How's Dougall doing these days, Helen?

My friend Muriel's Pipa had her twice yearly checkup yesterday at her clinic (blood test, injection, blood test again) and the vet was very happy with the results - everything is fine and she reacts really well to the treatment. Needless to say Muriel is so relieved! It will be one year next month since Pipa's Cushing was diagnosed.

So I do hope Dougall will be doing just as well as Pipa!

I'm sorry to say that we haven't yet got it under total control. We have had to adjust the medication from 50g once a day to 30mg twice a day, however although the clinical symptoms have improved, the physical symptoms are still there. He is still ravenous and still has us up 2/3 times a night, and by all accounts these symptoms should have subsided by now (his fur has got very thin and patchy, and he has lost muscle tone in his rear legs, although I realise these will take a while to resolve).

The vets are convinced there is something else there as well which is stopping the drugs fully working. He had a full blood profile and thyroid test on Monday together with his usual ACTH routine test.

We have a meeting tomorrow with a consultant to review everything and see where we go from here, so I guess more tests in the pipeline. Crying or Very sad

So sorry to hear this Helen, it does seem there may be something else going on, I hope they get to the bottom of it with the blood tests.
