Sadly we had to say goodbye to our wonderful horse Jim. He has been with us since 1997 and has been such a good friend. He was bold and brave and has looked after me throughout. We have had so much fun together and both Mark and I will miss him dreadfully.

Ken and Tali will miss him too as they have known him all their lives and he was always very gentle and patient with them.

Gilly, I'm totally devastated to read this news. I cannot express my sorrow in words, but please know that we are thinking of you all at this saddest of times - your Jim was aptly named, he was indeed a 'Gentleman' in the truest sense of the word.

Jim

I have had very little contact with horses, but I have always admired those who were in tune with them and wished I had the same talent. I spent all my money, as a youngster at the fair on holiday, either on driving the little motor boats or sitting on a horse going round and round the channelled courses; not much skill involved there.

When my daughter was young I took her for riding lessons, occasionally taking her turn at mucking out stables when she had orchestra practice. Many years later on our way across route 66 I joined in a couple of group rides, the horses were patient creatures who plodded on with this lump on their backs very kindly; they knew what to do even if I didn't. But, when I steered mine around an overhanging branch while everyone else ducked under it you wouldn't believe how much pleasure that little incident gave me. Silly really. Rolling Eyes

Years later I went to stay with Gilly and Mark and I met you and Compey. At first I kept well away on the other side of what seemed to be a rather flimsy wire, but eventually plucked up my courage - well, you were an awful lot bigger then I am - and cautiously learned how to offer carrots. I was so surprised at how gently this mountain of flesh took them from me.

I remember the day when Gilly, busy with other stable chores, called across, "Jim will finish his food first, don't let Jim eat Compey's." Hmm!!!!!; the only way to do that was to stand between them, hold Jim's head collar and keep my fingers crossed. Sure enough, he scoffed all his food and then made a move at Compey, I shoved his shoulder back and though I could feel his immense weight he stopped. Wow, was I relieved; surprised and pleased.

As the years have gone by with many visits to you at the stables I have had the pleasure of reviving my mucking out skills, (not very often); of learning how to poo pick some very bumpy and large fields, (very good exercise); of learning to be close to you wonderful creatures, cautious but not afraid; of being able to lead some of you around and of the lovely feeling of the soft lips as carrots are eagerly snuffled up.

So now, when my other horsey friends are in need I am able to offer basic minding services with some confidence and a good deal of satisfaction. I will never have the relationship that others have with your kind but you, with your gentle ways, have helped me on my way to realising a long held ambition.

The last time we met you looked fantastic, tall and strong with a burnished coat that gleamed in the sun, a picture I will keep in my heart forever.

Couldn't resist just a short verse

I know that you were Gilly's horse
that I'd no special claim on you,
for in your mind I was, of course,
just, "she who came to pick the poo." Very Happy

But on my part there grew a bond
that time will never sever
for all the things I learned from you
will stay with me for ever.

Thank you, Gentleman Jim, for all the gifts you gave me.

Sleep well.
Joy xxx
