Last night around 9:30 I was upstairs watching tv with Gus, he suddenly jumped up ran downstairs and Gary let him out. Well...all of a sudden he was barking like a madman at the fence by the side of the house. I came down and Gary opened the patio door and turned the light on and there was a man cowering on the other side of the fence which is chain link. Gary yelled what are you doing and before the guy could answer 2 cops came crashing through the trees and ordered him to lie down and put his hands behind his back.
A few minutes later an RCMP truck pulled up to the gates and he told us that the guy was drunk and had thrown a bag of cocaine out his truck window and took off on foot through the forest and ended up by my fence, he said without Gus non stop hysterical barking they wouldn’t have found him so they wanted to stop by and thank him he gave him some beef jerky as a reward.
I have to say that’s the first time he’s been rewarded for non stop barking

It seems like everything happens at once I’m just glad he didn’t have a gun, Alberta is like Texas...guns everywhere even though we aren’t allowed to open carry.
Gus got more than one treat today lol and heaps of praise.

The Honourable Gus, R.C.M.P.
At first I thought you meant you were glad GUS didnt have a gun.... and, before I realised that wasnt what you meant, I agreed wholeheartedly.... |

Gus always barks like he’s on a mission, it could be a bag or a leaf blowing by and according to him it requires heavy non stop barking...I just hope he doesn’t now think he’ll always get a good boy treat for doing it

Good boy, he is obviously a brilliant guard dog. My 2 sound like they would kill you if only people knew they would get licked to death. |

Yes they do sound scary, Gus isn’t overly fond of men he doesn’t know. He adores women but I’ve caught him mid lunge at the postman and keep him indoors if we have a delivery. He’s quite tiny for a male Beardie he only comes up to my knees so people often think he’s a girl.

Always good to have a loudly barking dog - no matter what the size |

Wowww, amazing! Well done, Gus!
I heard quite recently that "vigorous" barking used to be included in the list of good qualities for a Beardie when advertising one for sale - that was when more Beardies than nowadays were used for looking after large herds of ewes on the moors in Scotland. A "good barker" was much appreciated because a ewe who strayed from the herd on a foggy day had far better chances to find her way back, led by the Beardie's powerful voice. |

Yes Judy, in fact I think it must have been a collective piece of work, as I too know quite a few "good barkers" who might have been involved in spreading the info! |

I don't think my neighbours would agree on that one Basil is an extremely loud barker especially around 6am....he likes to tell the street that we are awake!
His enthusiasm knows no bounds, he is so happy about everything and likes to let everyone know. |

I’m grateful we don’t have neighbours lol. If vigorous barking was a good quality when selling a Beardie Gus would fetch a million dollars. He even barks at the fridge when he wants a treat and his “inside” voice is as loud as his outside voice.

...correct me if I am wrong, but fridges always open when you bark at them! It is like magic - you bark, they obey! |

Oh man...Gus would be over the moon if barking actually opened the fridge door and he could help himself.
