Some friends of mine here in France have a lovely Beardie who was rescued and whom they adopted at the end of 2019. His ears were in a terrible condition when he was rescued, and he had to have surgery, various treatments, etc. He has been ok since then, but now he has just developed otitis and has started taking antibiotics. His owners have heard of a natural remedy called Thornit, apparently made in the UK since the early 20th century, which is well-known for the prevention of ear infection. I've told my friend I would ask you here as I know quite a few of you are experts on that sort of thing. Have you heard of it, or maybe have used it for your own dogs before ? Thank you for your reply! |

Hi Nina
We use Thornit to help remove the hair from their ears. I think it acts as a mild anaesthetic to help ease removal of hair.
It is available from UK online vet drug companies or eBay. If they need any help getting the product I'm sure we could help.
This is the description of the product
Description
Thornit Canker Powder can be used effectively for the treatment of ear mites in cats, dogs and small animals.
Designed to work quickly to reduce symptoms and ease irritation, Thornit Canker Powder should be massaged directly, yet gently just inside the ear surface to help eliminate wax caused by the ear mites.
It is also worthwhile applying Thornit to the paws of your pet to avoid cross-contamination.
Ingredients:
Zinc Oxide, Talc, Iodoform, Boric |

Yes Nina I have both heard of Thornit and used it albeit only for harvest mite not ears. It is highly recommended for ears though and from all reports is very effective, however I think it is for mites rather than infections so may not be suitable for this beardie. A word of caution also, it is a powder so should be used sparingly. I hope your friends manage to get on top of the problem, ears are really difficult to sort when they get that bad. |

Got a little bottle from Crufts one year. Great stuff but don’t sprinkle it actually down the ear as it can build up a gunk inside. Love the smell but then I am a little strange that way. |

Jacquie, in French there are several ways to reply to "merci!", my favourite is "Avec grand plaisir!" (literally: "with great pleasure") . |

Hi NINA
I use this on all four of mine. It stops the ears getting the ears getting
problems and infection from mites - I use it about six monthly.
